Born on May 4, 1935, on the family farm near Carthage, Erma was the daughter of Henrich “Henry” and Mary Alice (Smith) Wachtendorf. She was raised with strong Midwestern values that shaped her character and guided her throughout her life. A proud graduate of Carthage High School’s Class of 1953, Erma carried with her a lifelong commitment to hard work and service.

On May 4, 1958, she married the love of her life, Francis Wayne Swank, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Carthage. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, perseverance, and love. Erma embraced the role of a devoted farm wife, working tirelessly alongside Wayne while also dedicating herself to her church family. She served for many years as a children’s Sunday school teacher, faithfully cared for the altar candles, and found joy in women’s Bible study and the Widow Women Group.

Erma’s professional life reflected the same dedication she gave to all she did. She worked at Sherrick’s Drug Store before beginning a long and respected career at the Hancock County Courthouse, where she served in the County Clerk’s Office for 31 years. She retired in 2009, leaving behind a legacy of reliability, kindness, and integrity.

After retirement, Erma completed the cemetery pond project she and Wayne had started together—a meaningful tribute to their shared commitment to community. She especially loved being outdoors and had a tender affection for her beloved kitty cats, who brought her comfort and companionship.

Erma is survived by her daughter-in-law, Sally Swank; granddaughter, Heather (Brandon McMullen) Swank; sister, Evelyn Briley; nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Wayne, son Gary, sister Mary Patrick, and brother Richard Wachtendorf.

Erma Eileen Swank will be remembered for her gentle spirit, steadfast faith, and the quiet grace with which she lived her life. Her memory will remain a blessing to all who knew and loved her.
